When Annie and I first started dating she introduced me to chai. I had never even so much as had a sip of coffee so I automatically assumed I would not like it. I was so incredibly wrong. The best way to describe a chai latte is like a warm hug. At first I would only drink it on occasion and was not too picky about the brand. As time went on it went from a once in a while treat to making the perfect blend at home. It has become a ritual for our weekend mornings. And now I look forward to that cup, or two, typically for me every morning. We think we have perfected the chai latte at home. Give it a try and let us know what you think! Here are the key ingredients to making the best chai latte at home:
Invest in a Good Frother
Using a frother to make chai or hot chocolate is a game changer. Our current frother is the Smeg and we couldn’t be more pleased with it after almost 3 years of use. The Smeg frother has loads of options from extra hot to extra foam and cool foam options. It’s also great for hot chocolate or just frothing milk. We mostly use it for our chai lattes.
Good Chai Concentrate
We have long been fans of Bhakti chai concentrate and we have a subscription so we go without a box on hand. It’s spicy with just the right amount of sweet. We mix it at a half concentrate/half milk to slightly more concentrate than the milk ratio. The ingredients are also organic and has slightly less sugar than other chai concentrates (this is definitely a treat in our eyes, but it makes us happy!). A newer brand to us is Evergreen chai, we first had at our favorite coffee shop in Austin called Mañana. It comes as a powder. I prefer to create a concentrate (it mixes with water) and store it in glass container in our fridge. You can also do single servings. We have only tried their spicy ginger chai and absolutely love it. Evergreen also uses organic ingredients and has less sugar than most concentrates.
The Right Milk
Choosing the right milk is key to making a perfect chai. Skip the barista blends as they usually have gums or seed oils. If you prefer nut or seed milk we like Malk (best tasting) and Three Seeds (foams up really well). Raw whole milk if you can get it and your body tolerates it is also a great option. Avoid oat and non-organic cow’s milk. Always check the ingredients.
